A high-charge cationic polyelectrolyte belongs in the test set when negatively charged, highly hydrated biological solids show substantial charge demand. Higher charge can reduce the active dose required for neutralization, but it can also narrow the safe operating window.

Verify the reason for higher demand

Measure or at least record sludge origin, soluble organics, pH, conductivity, iron or aluminium carryover, biological age and storage. A sudden increase in polymer demand may come from process upset, dilution error or septicity rather than a permanent need for a different grade.

Use charge analysis as supporting evidence, not a substitute for equipment performance. Endpoints should include water release, solids capture and final cake quality.

Locate overdose deliberately

Test downward and upward from the apparent optimum. Excess positive charge can restabilize particles or produce sticky, water-retaining floc. Symptoms may include cloudy centrate, poor drainage, elastic cake, higher torque or a declining cake-solids result despite a larger dose.

Keep solution strength and mixing constant while charge profiles are compared. An uneven concentrated stream can imitate a grade mismatch because part of the sludge remains untreated and another part is overdosed.

Control scale-up

Begin near the middle of the repeatable bench window. Change one variable, wait for the full machine and recycle residence, and collect matched feed, centrate or filtrate and cake samples. Keep the grade code, lot and active-dose calculation in the trial sheet.
